This past Thursday, May 1st, Trabajadores Unidos hosted a vibrant celebration of International Workers’ Day at their headquarters, located at 1419 V Street NW. The full-day event brought together dozens of community members in a spirit of unity, reflection, and festivity—honoring the strength and daily contributions of immigrant workers in the city.
The day began at 10:00 AM with the traditional Jornalero Breakfast, where attendees shared a meal and received updates on the current state of immigration policy and legal developments. The session served as an important moment to empower the community with knowledge and resources in the face of a complex immigration system.
At 12:00 PM, the community gathered for an Informative Lunch focused on tenants’ rights. Topics included access to dignified housing, legal protections for renters of rooms, apartments, or houses, and available resources in case of landlord abuse or housing disputes. The discussion aimed to equip participants with practical tools for navigating housing issues.
Throughout the day, attendees enjoyed a powerful photography exhibit showcasing the work of immigrant members of the organization. The exhibit portrayed personal stories of labor, resilience, and hope—offering a deeply human and artistic window into the lived experiences of the community.
Between 3:00 and 5:00 PM, a scheduled rest period allowed participants to relax and connect with one another, strengthening community bonds and mutual support.
In the evening, the celebration continued with a certificate ceremony honoring English language students and distinguished members of the organization for their commitment and participation. The event concluded with a community dinner and a lively dance celebration that lasted until 9:00 PM.
One of the most anticipated parts of the day was the $100 raffle, held during each of the event’s three main time blocks: morning, afternoon, and evening. The raffles added excitement to the event and served as a meaningful gesture of financial support to participants.
The day stood as a powerful reminder of the importance of community organization, collective learning, and shared celebration. As many attendees expressed, the event reaffirmed that beyond their daily labor, there exists a strong and supportive community ready to grow, advocate, and celebrate together.
