We launched our Workers' Day in good company with coffee and cookies. We began the first workshop by showing some videos about the historical struggle of workers and how International Workers' Day emerged as a result of protests on May 1, 1886 in the United States for an 8-hour work day, but unfortunately we have forgotten that history. We also debuted new videos we created in collaboration with the Washington Lawyers' Committee that address our current employment rights, regardless of our immigration status. We then received a super informative visit from the DC Library about the many free programs they offer, which resulted in 16 people getting their library cards. Housing Counseling Services held a workshop on financial planning and how to establish credit to improve housing conditions. Additionally, various presentations about the Voting Rights for All in DC Campaign were held, highlighting the importance of exercising this new right to make our voice heard in the politics that impact our daily lives.
In the evening, we presented certificates to students who completed our English and OSHA 10 courses, and expressed our gratitude to the volunteers who taught and supported our programs this year. Congratulations to our students!
We enjoyed delicious meals with lunch from Bandit Taco and dinner from Los Hermanos. Once again, DJ Elmer Daft3r gave us lots of music and dancing to conclude our celebration in honor of workers.
